Connected … With or Without A Network
The Challenge
Communication networks are extending their
reach, evolving into hybrid IP networks,
combining the bandwidth of WiFi and the
coverage (ubiquity) of a 2.5G cellular data
network. This coexistence, between wireless
IP technologies, makes the hybrid network
a potentially cost effective alternative
to 3G for pervasive wireless access. At
a fraction of the cost of a similar 3G network,
the hybrid network is already able to provide
ALL of the 3G services TODAY.
The Solution
There are synergistic opportunities in meeting
these challenges:
(a) coalescing
the fragmented hotspot market increases
footprint coverage and market acceptance
as a credible access platform; unifying
hybrid networks into a seamless service
for customers defuses expectation gaps in
coverage and bandwidth, and generates
(b) a higher
(albeit shared) data traffic; tailoring
a range of new user experiences found in
personalized, location based, time critical
and collaborative networking
(c) services,
that represents the different access and
bandwidth opportunities within a hybrid
network, helps to retain customers and enhances
revenues.
SONaccess Modules
Network-based Software Modules
a) SONaccess
Gateway - Access Controller Module, an intelligent
access controller software providing multiple
user authentication schemes and accounting
methods to support the network provider’s
revenue model.
b) SONaccess
Gateway - Foreign Agent Module is the Foreign
Agent (FA) component of the Mobile IP protocol
located at the edge of a service provider's
network being "visited" by a roaming
mobile user. It is the mobile user’s
temporary index router that assists the
user in informing his home network of his
current care-of-address (COA) and thereby
receiving all packets addressed to him at
his home network.
c) SONaccess
Gateway - Location Based Service (LBS) Module
which enables the provision of location-dependent,
personalized and value-added services to
mobile users in a wireless LAN environment.
d) SONaccess@Home
is the Home Agent (HA) component of the
Mobile IP protocol. It is located on the
user's home network (which may be located
within a service provider's network or within
an enterprise network) and is constantly
being informed of the mobile user’s
current location, as represented by his
COA. The HA is thereby able to forward all
packets to the user’s current location.
Client-based Software Modules
SONmobile is a Mobile IP
client software installed onto mobile devices
to provide them with the unique ability
to maintain sessions, regardless of movement
between locations on different networks.
It maintains a continuous communication
with the user’s home network using
only the one same (permanent) home IP address
at each point of attachment to the network
as the user moves from network to network.
In its essence, SONaccess enables the network
provider to better manage user access into
its hybrid network and supports various
user-specific LBS revenue models, over and
above the critical seamless handoff between
and within the different IP based networks,
across multiple access points and access
technologies.
Secure Access
The Advantage
Network security begins
with network access; usually from the edge
of the provider’s network. SONaccess
includes an intelligent multi-functional
access controller (AC) module and Mobile
IP agents that address common network access,
network security and service deployment
issues of network providers. SONaccess servers
represents the first line of defense against
unauthorized access; providing simultaneous
support for multiple authentication mechanisms
that work seamlessly with different networks
of service providers, offering multiple
charging/billing methods. SONaccess features
both web-based and port-based authentication
schemes that support all EAP authentication
methods; supports both RADIUS and DIAMETER
AAA and interoperates with major third party
VPN solutions for secure access to internal
corporate networks.
Secure Seamless Mobility
SONaccess provides persistence
or continuity of the user’s online
application (session) when moving in and
out of different participating IP networks,
whether from WiFi to WiFi or WiFi to a GPRS
or CDMA network. This seamless mobility
is painless and hassle-free, without the
need for any manual user intervention or
network changes required of the WAN provider.
The home network (represented by a Home
Agent) monitors the mobile user’s
points of attachments (represented by a
Foreign Agent at each visited network) as
the user roams across different wired and/or
wireless IP networks, and re-routes all
IP traffic destined for the user to his
current location. In a commercial deployment,
SONaccess provides added security by requiring
authentication of the user to access the
network and accounting for their usage thereafter
as the user roams amongst participating
networks.

Location Based Services
Relevant and personalized
information makes for compelling applications
that retains a user’s interest and
keeps the user connected to the network.
SONaccess combines it unique seamless roaming
solution with its LBS module to enable network
providers to push specific services and
personalized information of interest to
the mobile user based on the user’s
proximity to these location or services.
Effectively, SONaccess enables the combination
of the mobile Internet, mobile commerce,
multimedia content and location based services,
to personalize the user’s mobile experience.
Key Benefits
• Mix-and-Match Flexibility.
By co-locating several SONaccess modules
into a single select hardware platform,
SONaccess seeks to reduce the network complexity
and thus the multiplicity of network devices
required at the edge of the network. This
limits maintenance to a single point of
failure and allows network providers to
better manage their up front investment
cost while providing "mix-and-match"
flexibility of their network access services.
• Complete Family
Of Products. SONaccess promises a complete
mobile Internet infrastructure solution
for network operators and enterprises alike.
• Scalability : The
Dynamic Home IP assignment feature of SONaccess@Home
allows the Radius Server to efficiently
distribute the load of the MobileIP traffic
among several Home Agents.
• Carrier Class Redundancy
: Besides the power supply redundancy, SONaccess
also supports VRRP for eliminating single
point of failure that can halt existing
sessions.
• Standards-Based
Inter-Operatability : SONaccess products
are based on IETF and other industry standards
to guarantee its inter-operatability with
Home Agent and Foreign Agent routers from
major vendors.
